It seems like everybody is starting a blog nowadays. Lawyers, window blind sellers, web designers. Everyone and their mother is launching a blog on their website. And for good reason. A blog allows you to reach your audience on a regular basis. It increases your visibility. It allows you to position yourself as expert in your field, and so much more.
Quality, consistent blog posts can be used as one of your strongest online marketing tools. I have seen it in other businesses. Businesses with email-lists in the thousands, where 20% of their audience opens their blog posts every other week. Where their blogs remind hundreds, if not thousands of people of their services and that they still exist.
Though it’s not as simple as writing about anything in your industry and hitting ‘send’. The blog posts have to entice and offer value to the readers, and they must be consistent. This is the very reason why I have been avoiding blogging myself. But now, after working with businesses who have found success in blogging, it’s clear to me that I need to start a blog. Here are 3 reasons why too you should start a blog (in combination with a newsletter) on your website.
Another Touchpoint
On average, it takes 5 – 7 touchpoints to close a sale. In marketing, a touchpoint means a point of contact with a existing customer or potential customer. It takes time for people to feel comfortable with you before you can pull the trigger and make the sale. Apparently, a potential customer needs to interact with you or your product 5-7 times before purchasing. A touchpoint can be meeting the prospect for the first time. It can mean following up with them by phone. It can also mean sending them a monthly blog post in their inbox.
More SEO
Google just published news on its recent SEO updates and advice on how to improve your search result rankings. Ironically, I learned about this publication by being emailed a blog post by SEO guru Neil Patel. SEO used to be a game of fooling search engines (like Google) into ranking your website higher in your industry and city using techniques that rely on technical and analytical abilities. While that still holds true to a certain extent, a lot has changed since then. Search result rankings are now primarily influenced by content. Plain old content. This means that any business owner can increase organic traffic to their website by creating quality content related to their industry. That’s not to say your business wouldn’t benefit from implementing SEO professionally, but that you yourself can contribute directly to the process.
Inform Your Audience
There may be something you want to communicate to your prospects. It could be that you want to educate them about your services and of what makes you different from your competitors. It could be that you feel that it’s your duty to inform your audience of the tricks and techniques of your industry. Whatever the reason is, starting a blog will increase your visibility and position yourself as an expert in your field.
Starting a blog may not be the right move for your business. But if you’re looking for new ways to increase your visibility and attract more leads, then it’s worth a shot. Just so long as you do it right. Write quality content, be consistent and send your blogs out in a newsletter.
